This is one of my current clients: 84 years old, history of heart disease and cancer and getting stronger every week.
There are many benefits to resistance training for people of all ages, including older adults. Such benefits include:
Bone health - decreased risk of osteoporosis
Maintenance of muscle - as we age we lose muscle mass, even in the absence of chronic disease. In order to keep strong, we've got to maintain muscle mass.
Increased mobility and flexibilty
Management of blood pressure
Management of blood sugar and cholesterol (diabetes and heart health)
In turn, you could benefit from:
Increased energy levels
Decreased risk of falls
Decreased risk of chronic disease
Healthy life expectancy
Enhanced independent living
Increased confidence and mental well-being
But what does this really mean?
You feel stronger
You're able to put your socks on in the morning
You can get out of the bath
You can carry your shopping home
You can put your shopping away into cupboards (even the top ones!)
You can walk with friends
You can do the gardening
You can play with your grandchildren
This list could go on and everyone's goals are different, but overall the focus is on maintaining your independence and improving the quality of your life.
Please don't let your age limit your potential!
